We join Council Members Vanessa Fuentes and José Velásquez and Mayor Pro Tem José “Chito” Vela in calling for a full, independent investigation into today’s shooting by an ICE agent in North Austin.
This happened in our community. A neighbor is in the hospital tonight with a gunshot wound, and residents watched it unfold blocks from their homes. We cannot treat that as routine, and we will not look away.
This should be investigated independently, with the evidence reviewed by the Travis County District Attorney’s Office. Our neighbors deserve the truth, not the word of the same agency under scrutiny.
We urge the Austin Police Department to move forward with an independent investigation, and we call on ICE and DHS to fully cooperate — including releasing all relevant video and records.
